The Swine Flu Outbreak

The Swine Flu is in the news of late with outbreaks in Mexico and parts of the United States. Here is my disclaimer, I am not a doctor nor do I work in the health care profession. I am a writer who did a little research  on Swine Flu and wanted to share what I found. According to the CNN website the Swine Flu recently infected 8 people in the United States and killed at least 68 in Mexico.

Swine Flu is what is sounds like, a strain of influenza that usually affects hogs but can spread to people. Like all forms of the flu this version is the most dangerous to the very old, very young and people with a compromised immune system.

The best way to avoid catching the Swine Flu is by frequent hand washing and by avoiding people who are clearly sick. Of course using some type of germ killing disinfectant in your home cleaning can probably help as well. Out in public be aware of where you put your hands, door knobs often are loaded with germs. Ladies you may also want to reconsider laying your purse on the floor in a public place. When you pick it up you also pick up lots of germs.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (hereafter referred to as CDC) has this to say about Swine Flu on their website. The symptoms of swine flu in people are expected to be similar to the symptoms of regular human seasonal influenza and include fever, lethargy, lack of appetite and coughing. Some people with swine flu also have reported runny nose, sore throat, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Click this link to go to the CDC page for more information on Swine Flu or other topics.

Let me be clear about how you catch Swine Flu, you don't do so by eating pork. You can catch Swine Flu from an infected person or by being around infected hogs. There are vaccines to protect pigs or hogs but not humans form Swine Flu.

The problem with virus's like Swine Flu is that they adapt over time and are able to shake off attempts to fight them with medicines. One advantage we have in America over Mexico though is better health care. I don't expect the Swine Flu outbreak to be as bad or as deadly in the United States.

Swine flu preparation extends into rural New Hampshire

My family lives in Strafford, N.H. My son's school, Coe-Brown Northwood Academy, sent home an informational letter about swine flu this week.

I have been watching the news and checking the CDC website for the latest information, but it's comforting to know the school is on top of things and planning contingencies. The letter from the school headmaster said he

had been in touch with the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services about the swine flu strain.

The New Hampshire DHHS told the school that students who show no signs of illness can safely attend school, even if they have recently traveled to an area known to have swine flu infections. At the time the letter was written, that included only Mexico and a few states. The list of affected areas has since expanded.

On the other hand, the school letter also reflected how little we know about the new outbreak of swine flu. It says that if the new strain spreads to an area and "if it causes severe illness," then schools may be closed to reduce the spread of the disease. The letter also provided the CDC's standard advice on steps to take to avoid catching or spreading the flu: Wash your hands properly and frequently, cover your cough, keep your hands away from your nose and mouth and other common-sense approaches.

My son told me that in the school's daily public address, officials asked students who recently had traveled to any affected area to check in with the school nurse. Because this was just a couple days after a week-long April vacation, there are probably more than a few who fall into that group.

For now, though, I am not overly concerned. With the exception of one young boy in Texas, who is reported to have had underlying health conditions, every confirmed case of the new swine flu in the United States has had a positive outcome, according to the CDC.

Swine Flu: from New Jersey's 1976 to Today

America has only 8 cases that are expected to be fine. Centers for Disease Control has stated that there is not enough of an outbreak to consider it an epidemic. What are they waiting for? Perhaps the CDC is not trying to relive the past.

Swine Flu, Past Dimensions: Something You Should Know

Swine flu, a look back at 1976. A Fort Dix army recruit, David Lewis, 19, died 24 hours after complaining to his drill instructor that he felt tired and weak with no indication that his weakness was severe enough for medical attention. Two weeks later, four other fellow soldiers were hospitalized for the same thing at the Army base in Burlington County, New Jersey. All four survived.

It was founded that 500 other soldiers fell victim to swine flu but did not fall ill in the manner that the others had. However many Americans were killed or seriously injured by the inoculation the government gave them to stave off the virus.

John Kent of President Avenue in Lawrence died in 1997 believing that the government shot had killed his first wife, Mary. Mary couldn't even tie a bow just days after having her government "inoculation" shot. An independent claim that would open up a new can of worms when it came to flu prevention. But you have to remember the time frame of this situation.

Gerald Ford was in office. He needed to influence the big drug manufacturers, and with the past fear of World War I replaying itself, Ford decided to immunize 220 million Americans in hopes that the swine flu would not spread. World War I was said to have had some soldiers come back with some form of a plague. A situation that Ford learned from, a moment that would gear his choice.

Swine flu would be born in name and was usually found in domestic pigs and the wild swine until time taught us well. A mix of human and bird strains had been added contributors.

11/11/2009LoriI heard the whole 75-76 swine flu shot thing turned out to be a scam. This, however, is the real deal. People have died. It's funny because my mom was thinking about having me get that shot in late '75. I am glad she didn't follow through on that decision!Mike Silverman
07/08/2009Journalist Files Charges Against WHO and UN for Bioterrorism and Intent to Commit Mass Murder.Austrian investigative journalist is warning the world that the greatest crime in the history of humanity is underway.Jane Burgermeister has recently filed criminal charges with the FBI againstthe World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations (UN), and several of the highest ranking government corporate officials including President Obama, David deRoschild and David Rockefeller concerning bioterrorism and attempts to commit mass murder. She has also prepared an injunction against forced vaccination which is being filed in America. These actions follow her chargesfiled in April against Baxter AG and Avir Green Hills Biotechnology of Austria for producing contaminated bird flu vaccine. 05/01/2009Anti-government? I think it's fairly obvious to anybody paying attention that the American health establishment has been overrun by pharmaceutical corporations. As far back as '76? Apparently. They now force children to have some 36 mandatory 'one size fits all' vaccinations. Anyway, this "pandemic" isn't living up to the name, but that isn't stopping the public health people from pouring money into a vaccine and buying up more medicine. I think a lot of problems in this world come from people who feel they absolutely have to do something about everything.3lilangels

04/25/2009You make some excellent points. Sitting here in CA, just a short ride away from the Mexican border, I cannot help but wonder how rosy the picture really is. With borders that are virtually nonexisting, it is hard to believe that San Diego county is the only one with cases, as opposed to LA county. I have a feeling that there are tons of unreported cases. As to vaccinations, wow, that's quite a story. IMO, there are so many special interests embroiled in keeping their groups happy, it is hard to get the real story anymore.Writestuff444
04/25/2009I vaguely remember that outbreak, I'm a bit more concerned about this one. It seems odd, the combination of bird and swine and I think I need to do more reading on virus replication.
